Our Story (Part 2): The Phone Call…

As Jess and I prayed more and more about NYC we began to realize that that’s right where God was leading us. It didn’t take any time at before a mutual friend connected us to Pastor Dave.

Pastor Dave has been in the ministry world for a while and is currently a consultant for the Redeemer Church Planting Center and a coach for the Acts 29 Church Planting Network. He’s also the pastor of Grace, the church we’ll be working with in NYC.

Before we talked, Jess and I were already feeling like this may just be a divine connection and who God would be placing us with in NYC. I emailed Pastor Dave and received a prompt response that he was available the next morning and to give him a call. As we talked it became clear fairly quickly that our suspicions were correct, this was definitely a God inspired moment! But God had more plans than to just connect us that morning.

As we were talking I began feeling God begin to prompt me to ask Pastor Dave about potentially interning with him. I of course, in my infinite wisdom, reasoned this away. ‘Seriously God, I don’t know this man (except for the 5 minutes I’ve been on the phone with him), he doesn’t know me, they don’t have an internship program, they’re still a very young church that wouldn’t be able to accommodate an internship program at this time, and did I mention that I don’t really know him/he doesn’t know me?!?! There’s no way he’d go for this.’ But, God didn’t quit pestering me. ‘Come on Daniel, ask him’. ‘God, we’ve already been over this. No.’ ‘Yes.’ ‘No.’ ‘Yes.’ And you get the point…

Finally, I’d had enough. ‘Fine, I’ll ask him… sheesh God, I hope you know what you’re doing’. I waited until the perfect point in the conversation and there was a lull. Here we go. As I filled my lungs with air to begin leading down that path something unexpected happened. Pastor Dave jumped in and said something like, ‘You know Daniel, I believe that this is kind of a divine moment. Maybe we should explore the possibility of you guys moving up here and interning/apprenticing with us at Grace.’ WOW!

I responded that that I’d talk with Jess and pray about it and that we’d get back to him. That was Thursday, November 13. Just a few days later I called back to discuss further. We decided that the best course of action would be to head on up to NYC and meet face to face and see if this thing was going to work. So, on November 18th we purchased two tickets to NYC for less than a month later. This was happening fast!

So, on December 11th we boarded our flight for NYC…

(stay tuned for part 3 of our adventure…)
